| Nymphomania
In its traditional interpretation, a psychological and sexual disorder of women characterized by excessive desire and impulses to engage in sexual activities and achieve sexual satisfaction. These impulses and desires often cannot be satisfied. Nymphomania often results from the female being conflicted about whether or not she is an adequate person - a conflict that she is not consciously aware of. Nymphomania has traditionally been thought to be an expression of a deep psychological disorder. However, it is no longer listed as a disorder in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A person with nymphomania is known as a nymphomaniac. Nymphomaniacs are often distressed by their behavior and inability to see males as anything other than sexual objects to be conquered. Compare nymphomania with satyriasis. Satyriasis is excessive, abnormal, or uncontrollable sexual/romantic behaviors, desires, and excitement in the male. Nymphomania comes from the Latin word "nympha" meaning "nymphae" (an area in the female's private area), and the Greek word "mania" meaning "frenzy." Put the two words together and you have "nymphae frenzy." http://www.medfriendly.com/nymphomania.html | |
